Efficiency in the time of abundance

Today, the cloud provides unlimited resources that can be provisioned on a whim. Unfortunately, with abundance often comes carelessness and waste. This is especially true of many database vendors who haven’t designed for efficient processing or managing a system with competing priorities. They instead rely on brute scale, essentially adding more expensive compute resources, to accomplish their goals. But not Teradata. We’re the gold standard of efficiency and operations at scale.

A vision of elegant simplicity

Teradata VantageCloud Lake is designed to propel businesses into the future with Trusted AI at scale. The idea of using your data and AI/ML analytics to understand your business and run it better sounds simple, but is it?

The idea seems audacious: bringing all your data together (terabytes, petabytes ... there’s no limit!), harmonizing it either logically or physically, and then running deep and broad analytics across the entire spectrum—and it’s often viewed with skepticism. However, at Teradata we achieve this reality for customers every day. We’ve built a foundation that’s scalable and self-managed, so that even the largest systems are operated just like the smallest ones.

Optimizing resources at every opportunity

Without going into all the boring details, we rewrote the book on how data is managed in differentiated storage tiers, leveraging the idea of parallelism and relational set operations, and created a system of shared-nothing units of processing that can be put together with linear scalability.

We’ve pioneered aggressive optimization in query planning, which involves minimizing “chatty” operations, maximizing local processing, and eliminating bottlenecks at every step in the plan.  And with a rich set of self-managed optimization techniques like indexing, we’ve ensured that query execution is not only constantly optimized but done so at the lowest possible cost.

When it comes to optimizing resources at the system level, Teradata provides the recognized best workload management capabilities, hands down. Even in today’s world of “infinite resources,” none of these resources are free. While others advertise dynamic scaling to provide resources to manage peak seasons, it’s readily accepted that most vendors’ scaling policies don’t adequately provide for meeting the service-level agreements of mixed workloads. Their scaling occurs when query counts are exceeded, resulting in adding underutilized resources at great cost. This “peanut butter spreading” scaling methodology doesn’t provide the provision and financial governance of a lake system.

Workload management

Knowing that not all queries are equal, Teradata delivers a workload management system that enables businesses to easily define workload priorities so that VantageCloud Lake’s Query Optimizer can ensure high-priority workloads get the resources necessary for the job.

We make it possible to get the most out of a system by managing the workloads, which means that companies can get more workload accomplished without having to add more resources and therefore incur more costs.

Efficient resource optimization

In the world of “unlimited” cloud resources, it’s easy to blow your budget with unpredictable demand. The reality is that companies are still having to work with planning and budgets that cannot scale infinitely. Companies not only need to run workloads and meet user demand at scale across the enterprise, but they need to do it with efficiency. With VantageCloud Lake’s Query Optimizer, workload management, and financial governance guardrails, we truly squeeze every ounce of juice from system resources.

This is why Teradata is proven to have the lowest overall cost per query, and that’s the metric that matters most. Teradata brings out the ability to satisfy the demand predictably without giving your CFO a headache.
